The town is partially situated on the Holland River which flows through East Gwillimbury’s Newmarket neighbourhood. East Gwillimbury also includes the villages of Sharon, Holland Landing, Mount Albert and Queensville.
East Gwillimbury was formed as a township in 1820 from parts of West Gwillimbury and Whitchurch Townshipsto form East Gwillimbury East Townshipship. In 1971, East Gwillimbury East became East Gwillimbury when it was amalgamated with Queensville and Sharon to form the present-day town.
